Everything you wanted to know about luur, garment care and looking after the clothes you already own.

About luur

What is luur?

luur is a British garment care brand creating products, tools and knowledge to help people care for their clothes and keep them in use for longer.

We sit between fashion and care, making the less glamorous parts of owning clothes, like refreshing, maintaining, storing and repairing them, easier to understand and nicer to do.

Fashion care, not laundry.

What does luur make?

luur creates garment care products, clothing care tools and practical guidance for looking after modern wardrobes.

We are interested in everything that happens after a piece of clothing comes home with you: how you wear it, wash it, refresh it, store it, repair it and keep it looking good.

We are starting small. The wardrobe is much bigger.

Why did you start luur?

luur was founded after more than a decade working in fashion and seeing a gap between how much knowledge goes into making clothes and how little reaches the person who eventually owns them.

Friends would ask the same questions again and again:

Can I wash this?
How do I get this out?
Have I ruined this?

Usually, they had not.

We thought it was strange that an industry capable of telling you everything about what to buy next had relatively little to say about what to do with it afterwards.

So we started luur.

Who founded luur?

luur was founded by Karen Martin, a former Head of Product with more than a decade of experience in apparel and product development.

Where is luur based?

luur is a British garment care brand based in the UK.

Our first products are also being made in the UK.

As luur grows, we will share more about where and how the things we make are produced.

Is luur a sustainable fashion brand?

luur is a garment care brand focused on helping clothes stay in use for longer, rather than a fashion brand producing new clothes.

Sustainability is part of why luur exists, but we would rather be specific about what we do than make broad claims.

We focus on helping people understand, maintain and actually wear what they already own.

Garment care

What is garment care?

Garment care is the cleaning, refreshing, maintenance, repair and storage of clothing to keep it wearable and in good condition.

Laundry is part of that, but it is not all of it.

Sometimes the right care is washing. Sometimes it is airing, brushing, steaming, spot cleaning, repairing or simply leaving something alone.

luur exists to make knowing the difference easier.

How is garment care different from laundry?

Laundry focuses primarily on washing clothes, while garment care considers everything needed to maintain clothing throughout its life.

That includes knowing when not to wash something.

A silk blouse, wool coat, cashmere jumper and cotton T-shirt are not the same object. We do not think caring for them should be treated as though they are.

Why does luur say “Wash less. Care more.”?

“Wash less. Care more.” is luur’s approach to clothing care: wash clothes when they need washing, while using other forms of care when they do not.

It does not mean never washing your clothes.

It means moving away from automatically putting something in the laundry basket simply because it has been worn.

Look at it. Smell it. Understand the fabric. Then decide what it actually needs.

Do clothes need to be washed after every wear?

No, many clothes do not need to be washed after every wear, although how often a garment should be washed depends on the garment, fabric, how it was worn and whether it is actually dirty.

Underwear and clothes worn close to the body are different from coats, knitwear or something worn briefly over another layer.

There is not one correct washing frequency for an entire wardrobe.

That is why we would rather help you make the decision than give you another arbitrary laundry rule.

Why can washing less help clothes last longer?

Reducing unnecessary washing can help limit some of the wear clothing experiences through repeated laundering, including friction, heat and drying.

But “never wash your clothes” is not the answer either.

Good garment care is about giving a piece of clothing what it needs, when it needs it.

Our aim is longer-wearing clothes, not dirtier ones.

How do I make my clothes last longer?

Clothes can often be kept in use for longer by washing them appropriately, treating stains quickly, storing them correctly, repairing damage and following care suited to their fabric and construction.

The useful answer, unfortunately, is: it depends.

Silk does not behave like cotton. Knitwear does not behave like tailoring. A moth hole and a coffee stain are different problems.

That is why we are building clothing-care guidance alongside the things we make.

What should I do with clothes that aren’t clean or dirty?

Clothes that have been worn but do not need washing should ideally be aired before being returned to the wardrobe or stored for another wear.

And yes, we know where they usually go.

The chair. The end of the bed. The bannister. That one suspiciously overloaded hook.

In our research with 507 UK women, 75% told us they have somewhere clothes sit between worn and washed.

Wardrobe purgatory is apparently a shared experience.

Why is clothing care important?

Clothing care helps maintain the appearance, condition and usability of the clothes you already own.

Fashion does not end at the checkout. If you searched for the perfect vintage jacket, saved for a cashmere jumper or found trousers you want to wear twice a week, knowing how to look after them is part of owning them.

The most sustainable clothes are already in your wardrobe. Our job is to help keep them there.

Products

Does luur only make products?

No. luur is being built around products, tools and clothing-care knowledge.

Sometimes the answer to a clothing problem will be something we have made.

Sometimes it will be a clothes brush, a needle and thread or your washing machine.

And sometimes the answer will simply be: do not do anything.

We would rather give you the right answer than invent a product for every problem.

Is The Tonic fragranced?

No. The Tonic is fragrance-free.

It is designed to neutralise unwanted odour without replacing it with perfume.

Can The Tonic replace washing?

No. The Tonic is for clothes that are worn but not dirty, helping refresh them between washes.

If something is stained, visibly dirty or needs laundering, follow the garment’s care instructions.

What is the difference between the 150ml and 500ml Tonic?

The 150ml Tonic comes with the spray format for everyday use.

The 500ml Tonic is a refill format and does not include a sprayer.

Can I refill my 150ml Tonic bottle?

Yes. The 500ml format is designed to refill your 150ml bottle.
